Abstract

Interdisciplinarity is encouraged by many universities but colleagues receive very
mixed messages about how, when and indeed whether to follow this route. Research
funders, in particular, are insufficiently aware of the potentially negative consequences for academic careers of such “nomadism” in a system where universities continue to reward disciplinary specialists.
