My research areas

I am heading the Starch group at Plant Biochemistry Laboratory which is the leading starch research group in Denmark with activities covering starch biochemistry, molecular biology and starch biopolymer structure-function modelling. The research is focussed on in planta modification and analysis of starch biopolymers using mainly potato, Arabidopsis and barley as plant model systems. Transgenic plants and mutants are generated and starch structure- functionality and plant metabolism are investigated. Starch phosphorylation and the recently discovered starch phosphorylating enzyme GWD is of specific interest to explore the possibility for the generation of novel biopolymers and for the investigation of signalling in starch degradation. Multivariate algorithms are introduced to enable profiling of metabolites including biopolymers and phenotyping (bioimaging, spectroscopy) of plants. Enzyme mechanisms and molecular models for starch are established using in house organically synthesised specific starch motifs.
