My Research Focus

Although each human cell has some 30000 genes, only small subsets of these are expressed in a specific cell type. In the last decade it has become clear that the establishment and specification of the unique gene expression patterns in each individual cell type involves the interplay between specific transcription factors on one-hand and regulatory protein complexes that modify the chromatin structure on the other hand.

My research aims to unravel the mechanistic basis through which protein complexes and covalent histone modifications regulate gene expression patterns during human development and differentiation. In particular, I focus on characterizing enzymatic activities responsible for "erasing" the methyl mark on histones, so-called histone demethylases and how they interact with other protein factors to modify the chromatin template and regulate transcription.
