Primary fields of research

Primary fields of interest

Retinal disease. Medical and laser therapy of retinopathy. Hereditary diseases of the retina, choroid and optic nerve. Physiological optics and non-invasive examination of the eye, primarily using light. Experimental photochemistry and photolysis. Controlled clinical intervention trials.

Ongoing research

Interventional trials of treatment for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, central serous chorioretinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa. Studies of diagnostic methods and spontaneous course of optic nerve disease, shortsightedness (myopia), Stargardt disease and other hereditary diseases of the retina. Development of optical methods for diagnosis and treatment of eye disease.

Commercial-Academic Partnerships

Joint project with Torsana Diabetes Diagnostics A/S (later RetinaLyze A/S) 1998-2003 on the development of automated digital image diagnostics and non-invasive glycemia monitoring, leading to the spin-out of Visiopharm A/S, a leading supplier of diagnostic image analysis tools and Medtronic R&D Diabetes Denmark A/S, a developer of light-sensitive subcutaneous implants for glucose monitoring. A project with NKT Photonics (prev. Koheras A/S) 2007-2011 on the development of new light sources and femtosecond laser treatment of cataract under the Advanced Technology Foundation led to the development and marketing of the SuperK supercontinuum lasers.
