Personal profile

Short presentation

Trine Agervig Carstensen is associate professor in Urban Planning and Everyday Life at Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Section for Landscape Architecture and Planning and leader of the research group Spatial Change and Planning.

I am trained as a social scientist (M.Soc.Sc.) with a Master degree in Geography and History from Roskilde University (1999). I hold a PhD degree in Architecture from Aarhus School of Architecture (2005).

At the core of my research and teaching is an interest in the relationship between people’s everyday life and the built environment and its implications for urban planning and governance, sustainable urban mobility and urban liveability. I have a specific focus on how marginalised citizen groups (children, youth, socially vulnerable people) use, experience and prefer public space and living environments. I explore how novel methods for citizen sensitive knowledge production on living conditions, daily mobility and place attachment can inform and improve the inclusiveness and sustainability of urban planning. I also investigate how urban form and land-use, built infrastructures and transport cultures form transport behaviours, especially as regards sustainable travel modes.

I supervise PhD scholars Anne Madsbjerg (Urban Community Gardening), Anne Cunningham (Consent-making in participatory landscape architecture – double degree with LU, NZ) and co-supervise Peng Ding (Child-oriented Urban Public Space).

I teach and supervise in the Landscape Architecture programme. I am co-responsible for the bachelor courses Bysociologi (Urban sociology) and Projektværksted i landskabs- og bystudier (Project Writing Studio – Topics in Landscape and Urban Studies) and teach also at the courses Plan & Design 2 and Byplan Studio 1(Urban Planning Studio). I also supervise bachelor and master students.
