Research: brief description

Jesper Dammeyer’s research career has focused on people with sensory impairment (congenital and acquired deafness, blindness, and deafblindness) and the variety of psychological consequences it has for social, language, and cognitive development. He is PI of three large projects: A project concerning consequences of deafblindness among elderly people; a project about early language development among children with congenital deafblindness; and a project investigating the development and education of congenitally deaf children. The projects currently includes 6 PhD students and 2 Postdocs/research assistants. Former projects have, among others, been mental health and development among children with congenital deafblindness, psychosocial wellbeing and literacy skills development among children with congenital hearing impairment. Jesper Dammeyer is recognized as one of the leading psychology researchers within the field of deafblindness.

Other research areas are personality psychology. Jesper Dammeyer is PI for a project about personality and social networks. Another research area is educational psychology.

Jesper Dammeyer has written >5 Danish language textbooks. He often shares knowledge through oral presentations and electronic media.

  • Deafblindness: Congenital and acquired deafblindness and cognitive, social and language development and function among children and adults.
  • Deafness and hearing impairment: Congenital or acquired hearing impairment and psychological development: Well-being, mental and behavioral disorders, cognitive abilities, cochlear implantation.
  • Personality: Associations between personality, health, well-being, and disability. Social participation and personality. Personality tests. Personality online and offline.
  • Language development: Social and cognitive consequences of language delay or deprivation. Use of different language modalities and early cross-modal language development.
  • Disability Psychology: Socio-cultural models of disability reflecting social and medical understandings of disability.
  • Autism and intellectual impairment: Language development and behavior.
  • Communication: Support to people with severe communicative disorders. Associations between challenging behavior and communication difficulties.
