Beskrivelse

Unlike the choice of STEM bachelor programme, students’ choice of master’s programme has received limited attention. The Bologna 3+2 structure means that the transition after completed bachelor programme presents students with a decision point. This paper reports from a qualitative study of second-year science students focusing on their reflections concerning the choice of master’s programme. Through ethnographic fieldwork and interviews, the paper analyse the relation between the structures and cultures of two science programmes and what future paths and future possible selves students can imagine. One of the programmes has a wide range of possible paths to follow. This leaves the students with a number of opportunities that at the same time are attractive and scary. The other programme has a strong emphasis on students becoming researchers. Hence, students at this programme do not discuss possible futures, but neither does it leave much room for students to consider alternative paths.
