Why is centripetal acceleration v^2/r? Students’ struggles and preferences after seeing different derivations

Abstract

Different derivations of the centripetal acceleration equation were presented
to first-year physics students at the University of Copenhagen. Afterwards, semi-structured interviews with pairs of students were conducted in order to identify their understanding of each derivation, as well as their struggles and preferences. Some of our findings include the main technical issues they struggled with and an overall preference for a more general/abstract kind of derivation, even though its physical content was not always clear to the students.
