Abstract
The monocots, representing a major radiation of angiosperms, exhibit a diverse array of life forms (e.g. Kubitzki, 1998a, 1998b; Judziewicz et al., 1999; Dransfield et al., 2008), including perennial geophytes (many families, including Amaryllidaceae and Liliaceae), long-lived, woody textured ‘trees’ (Arecaceae), genuinely woody plants with a functioning secondary thickening meristem (genera of Asparagaceae subfamily Nolinoideae), emergent aquatics (Cyperaceae, Acoraceae, Eriocaulaceae), floating and submerged aquatics (several families of Alismatales), bamboos and other perennial and annual grasses (Poaceae), rosette epiphytes (Bromeliaceae), succulent epiphytes (Orchidaceae), mycoheterotrophs (Corsiaceae, Burmanniaceae, Triuridaceae) and other forms. The monocots also exhibit a broad range of reproductive features, including (among many other striking cases of extreme modification) the smallest and largest seeds (in Orchidaceae and Arecaceae, respectively). Generation of a comprehensive phylogeny of this group, integrating structural and molecular features as sources of evidence, and in turn helping to clarify diversification patterns in these features, is a goal of several working groups at this time, and the present contribution represents a step toward that goal. Numerous phylogenetic analyses of the monocots conducted over the past 20 years, employing a variety of molecular and morphological characters, have contributed to the development of an increasingly stable taxonomic system for the c. 80-100 conventionally recognized families of monocots (e.g. Duvall et al., 1993; Chase et al., 1995, 2000; Stevenson and Loconte, 1995; Neyland and Hennigan, 2003; Davis et al., 2004, 2006; Janssen and Bremer, 2004; Tamura et al., 2004; Givnish et al., 2006; Graham et al., 2006; Xiao-Xian and Zhe-Kun, 2007).
