Short presentation

Steen Ethelberg is a 10% Professor at the Section of Global Health. His research interest is the epidemiology of food- and waterborne and zoonotic infections in a Danish, European and Global perspective.

Steen Ethelberg’s research has in particular concerned analyses of sporadic disease occurrence – its distribution and transmission, risk factors and preventive potential and the burden of disease. A separate research interest has been in disease outbreak methods, i.e. how to detect and investigate outbreaks. The methods have mainly included cohort and case-control investigations in the form of register-based and prospective studies, analytical geographical analyses and studies with a microbiological component. Work has concerned a number of gastrointestinal diseases, with a particular focus Campylobacter, Salmonella, Listeria and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.

Steen is also a Senior Researcher in epidemiology at the SSI in Copenhagen. SSI is the Danish national institute for infectious disease control and prevention. At the SSI, he’s heading the section within the Epi Dept, responsible for the surveillance of Food&Waterborne and Zoonotic Infections in Denmark, including data analysis, risk assessment and outbreak detection & investigation. He’s national supervisor for the 2-year EU training program in intervention epidemiology (EPIET) for which the SSI is a host site.
