Katharina Ó Cathaoir, PhD, specialises in the interplay between health law and human rights, namely legal issues connected to the prevention and treatment non-communicable diseases. She contributes to several interdisciplinary projects spanning obesity provision, genomic medicine, data sharing and use of algorithms in treatment and research: Governing Obesity, MeinWe, EU Stands for PM and PM Heart. Katharina’s research analyses to what extent legal norms, like informed consent and the right to data protection, are implicated and in need of renegotiation in light of emerging health technologies.
Katharina holds a PhD in law (University of Copenhagen, 2017), LL.M. in International and Comparative law (Trinity College Dublin, 2012) and BCL in Law and Irish from University College Cork (2011).
Katharina's PhD degree (2017) analysed the extent to which children have a right to freedom from obesogenic marketing, and the corresponding obligations on states, individuals and companies. Her research was part of the interdisciplinary project Governing Obesity.
Since 2017, Katharina has been employed as a postdoctoral researcher within an interdisciplinary project: Personalized Medicine in the Danish Welfare State (MeInWe). Her research explores the dominant legal and ethical principles surrounding the introduction of personalized medicine, namely, informed consent, self-determination and solidarity. She is particularly interested in the legal issues surrounding genetic analysis and children.
Katharina is course responsible and lecturer in Health and Human Rights (LLM/ KA fag).
She teaches and supervises in Sundhedsret (Danish Health Law)
