Short presentation

Jesper Høgenhaven is active in research and teaching within Old Testament studies.

Major research areas

1) Old Testament theology and hermeneutics, relationship between Old and New Testament, the reception history of the Old Testament, and the relevance and meaning of Old Testament texts in contemporary Christian contexts

2)The Dead Sea Scrolls fromQumran, biblical and non-biblical texts, and their significance for the development of ancient Judaism, and for the formation of the biblical canon

Current research project

Space and Place in the Copper Scroll fromQumran(3Q15)

This well-preserved manuscript from Qumran Cave 3 presents itself as a list of hidden treasures, with explicit references to a considerable number of geographical names related to ancientPalestine. Many of these localities are known from biblical and other ancient sources. The Copper Scroll should be concieved and interpreted both as a literary text and as an archaelogical artefact. Viewed from eiehr perspective, the Copper Scroll is a medium for organizing, preserving and transmitting memories associated with places. The scroll represents a "mapping" of a particular landscape (partly with biblical connotations) as sacred space. The project intends to show how such an interpretation of the manuscript is able to move beyond previous scholarly debates e.g. pertaining to the historicity of the treasures and places described in the text.
