I am professor of political ecology. My background is a PhD from University of Copenhagen on economic and political aspects of decentralised forest management in Tanzania. Most of my research is concerned with popular participation in management of forests and other natural resources in developing countries. Within this broad area I have been focusing on: decentralized taxation of forest products; local knowledge in forest management; the division of and struggle for power over forest resources among actors ranging from State to rural dwellers and; the impacts of popular participation on forest conservation, rural livelihoods and local enfranchisement. Geographically, my research has focused mainly on Tanzania, but I have worked on some of the above mentioned issues in Nepal, Mozambique, Laos and India. I have also done some collaborative work on the political economy of timber exploitation in Ghana. Finally, I am increasingly engaging with the political economy of climate change and mitigation and the role of social movements in this.
