Janus Porsild Hansen

Janus Hansen is currently Head of the Department of Sociology and associate professor of sociology. He holds a Ph.D. from the European University Institute in Florence (2005) and an MSc in Sociology from UCPH (2000). Prior to joining UCPH as head of department he was associate professor (2011-2014) and assistant professor (2006-2011) at the Department of Business and Politics at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), where he also served as deputy head of department.

During his time as CBS Janus Hansen was intensely involved in the development of two new study programmes: 'BSc in Business Administration and Sociology' offered at CBS and 'MSc in Public Management and Social Development' offered at the Sino-Danish Centre for Research and Education in Beijing. He has served as programme director for both programmes.

Janus Hansen has held a post doctoral grant from the Danish Social Science Research Council (2006-2010). He has been the Danish partner in an EU FP7 project on citizen participation in the regulation of xenotransplantation (CIT-PART) and he has been a founding member of an EU COST action on the governance of novel-bioobjects. He has been a visiting scholar at New York University (US) and University of York (UK).

His research interests focus on the interplay between science & technology, politics and the public sphere. He isparticularly interested in the social basis and institutional dynamics of public controversies over technologies such as agricultural and medical biotechnology, the role of scientific expertise in the governance of science and technology as well as public engagement with and participation in  technological innovation. His occupation with these topics is combined with a more general interest in contemporary sociological theory.

His has published 'Biotechnology and Public Engagement in Europe' (Palgrave, 2010) and his work has appeared in journals such as 'Science as Culture', 'Science and Public Policy', 'Croatian Medical Journal' and 'STI Studies'.

He is a member of the research group on 'Knowledge, Organisation, Politics' at the Department of Sociology
