Mass Spectrometry Coupled to Separation Techniques in Bioanalytical Chemistry

Research

Mass spectrometry, specifically mass spectrometry imaging, surface analysis, instrumental development, ionization techniques and application of mass spectrometry imaging in plant science, drug delivery and pharmacology.

Primary fields of research

I am working with instrumental development of mass spectrometry for use in pharmaceutical analysis. In particular, the work comprises idevelopment and application of techniques for imaging of chemical compounds in biological samples by means of mass spectrometry (mass spectrometry imaging, MSI). More specifically, I am working with the two techniques Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) MSI og Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI)-MSI.

For MALDI-MSI the group has a special MALDI instrument, which by means of sophisticated laser optics and an excellent Orbitrap mass spectrometer enables imaging of biological samples with a very high detail level and very accurate identification of chemical compounds in the sample.

Current research

- development and application of mass spectrometry imaging (MSI), including DESI-MSI and high resolution MALDI-MSI

- application of DESI-MSI for imaging the distribution of drug and metabolites in laboratory animals

- application of high resolution MALDI-MSI in drug delivery studies of the penetration of drugs across various biological membranes

- application of DESI and MALDI-MSI for studies of natural product in plant materials
