Associate Professor, Biomass and Wood Science, Forest & Landscape. He has a PhD is Material Science and Engineering from Washington State University, USA. He started working here in 2008 and is primarily involved in research associated with the material science of biomass and wood materials, polymer composites, wood/agrofiber composites, adhesion, surfaces-coatings-adhesives in wood and biomass and its composites, bio-energy issues related to materials, nanofibers.

  1. Adhesion and reinforcement for “Superior Bio-based Coatings”- HTF grant
  2. Innovation Grant: Thermal Properties of Wood.
  3. CC Jensen on lignocellulosic fiber filters for engine oil in machinery.
  4. Nanofibers using enzymes.
  5. Improving bonding mechanisms in biomass pelletization for bioenergy.

 Grant Money brought in:

HTF- 2.9 million DKK total grant including contribution.

International Network Grant with Brazil on Nanofibers Preparation using enzymes: ~205.000 DKK (includes 44% overheads).

  • Preparation of cellulose nano-fibers.
  • Wood and natural fiber-plastic composites.
  • Adhesion and stress transfer in wood and agro-fiber polymer composites.
  • Thermal Properties and modification of Solid Wood (just started).
  • Hydrolysis of lignocellulosic material for bioethanol: primarily liquefaction studies using viscosity data. Relationship between hydrolysis and fiber length distribution, surface properties of fibers and flow properties of the slurry during enzymatic hydrolysis.
  • Biomass pellets for bioenergy: fundamental understating of pellet strength and integrity of the pellets using Material Science principals. Bonding mechanisms and fracture behavior of biomass pellets for energy use, both raw biomass and also torrefied lignocellulosic.
  • Properties of highly filled biomass composite panels systems using formaldehyde free adhesives (primary inventor of the technology).
  • New exterior coatings for wood and wood-paint/coating adhesive interactions.

 Work Highlights at University of Madison

 Invented a process to make composites of highly filled natural fibers (up to 90%) in polyolefins.

  • Fundamentals of adhesion
  • Used innovative technique to understand fiber-matrix interaction.
  • Wrote and obtained grant monies from federal and state agencies. Including being a principal investigator for an USDA NRI grants. Obtained also several state grants.
  • Collaborating with manufacturers in packaging, furniture, construction, and automotive industries.
  • Chairing sessions and presenting papers at several international conferences.
  • Helped organize international Wood-Plastics Conference.
  • Published extensively in reviewed journals.
  • Developed and taught a new course entitled “Materials Science of Natural Materials”

Visiting Associate Professor,

Royal Agricultural and Veterinary University (KVL), Denmark. April to July 1996 and June to October, 1997.

Worked with Prof. Per Olesen in the area of lignocellulosic bonding using enzymes.  Conducted extensive research on the dynamic mechanical analysis of natural fiber thermoplastics, supervised the department’s lab staff, and taught graduate and undergraduate students.
