Description
In March 2012 the Centre for Strategic Urban Research (www.byforskning.dk) started a research project on the challenges and prospects of Danish service towns / railway towns (da: stationsbyer) which I was involved in. For some basic analysis I digitized the historical railway network of Denmark. This dataset is available for free download and use as GIS shape file on this homepage.
The dataset consists of
- the existing and historical railway lines and railway ferries used for passenger service in Denmark (current borders)
- the year of opening (and closure) of passenger service on each line
- partially the year of closure of cargo service (if different from above)
- the length in km
When the dataset was established, the main aim was to gain an overview over which towns have or had connection to the railway. The aim was not to provide a precise historical record of opening and closure dates. Therefore the dataset can have errors.
