title = "Niqabis in Denmark: when politicians ask for a qualitative and quantitative profile of a very small and elusive subculture",
abstract = "This chapter presents the results of a study commissioned by the Danish government in connection with the political discussions on a ban of face veils in Denmark in 2009. Both the qualitative and the quantitative results challenged the political and public discourse at that time, and in the end the work fulfilled its purpose of giving a well-founded basis for political decision making. As such, the results are of general empirical interest, and they - by and large - demonstrated that the prevalence and motives of wearing face veils in Denmark are in line with what is known from other European studies. What also makes the study of general interest is the way in which we emphasized and addressed the methodological challenges of researching the small subculture of Muslim women wearing face veils in Denmark. These challenges were further augmented by the fact that the time allotted for the study was indeed limited, and that it was carried out in a politically tense atmosphere. The methodological issues, which make up a recurrent part of the discussion in the chapter, are relevant for a range of similar studies in the sociology of religion and also pertinent for the reliability of the conclusions, which in this case had to stand up against public prejudices and political spin.",
