Abstract

Smog chamber techniques were used to determine k(CH 3 OCF 2 CHCl 2 + Cl) = (5.04 ± 0.75) × 10 −13 , k(CH 3 OCF 2 CHCl 2 + OH) = (2.18 ± 0.38) × 10 −13 , and k(CH 3 OCF 2 CHCl 2 + O 3 ) < 1.5 × 10 −22 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 in 700 Torr of N 2 /air diluent at 296–300 K. The IR spectrum for CH 3 OCF 2 CHCl 2 is reported. CH 3 OCF 2 CHCl 2 is a short-lived compound with an estimated atmospheric lifetime of ∼54 days. The ozone depletion potential for CH 3 OCF 2 CHCl 2 was estimated to be on the order of 0.001 and a 100-year global warming potential of 4 was determined using a lifetime-corrected radiative efficiency estimation. Results are discussed with respect to the atmospheric chemistry of halogenated anesthetic gases.
