Kort præsentation

My Professorship covers the area of soil biological fertility as influenced by manure and waste products, both in terms of research and teaching.

Research My major research focus has been on biological soil fertility and the influence of organic matter decomposition processes on nutrient turnover in agro-ecosystems. However, with the exponential growth of industrialised animal production, both in developed countries like Denmark and in many developing countries (SE Asia), animal manure is becoming a major waste product, requiring safe, sustainable and sanitary management. Urban waste management approaches are also undergoing rapid changes, which have particular impacts on nutrient cycling opportunities in many countries. When waste is utilised on arable land, its fertilizer value and effects on soil quality should be optimised and negative effects of xenobiotics and pathogens on ecosystem and human health should be eliminated. My recent research focus has thus been broadened to also cover these areas. In our research group we have therefore organised activities in two platforms, namely:

Soil organic matter, soil quality and nutrient turnover - Fundamental processes and factors controlling the decomposition of organic matter, nutrient turnover and soil quality - Model development of soil organic matter and nutrient turnover - Biogeochemical processes controlling nutrient and contaminant availability and mobility

Utilisation of agricultural and urban waste as fertilizer - Land application of animal manures and other waste products from agriculture, industry and society and their fertiliser value and effects on soil quality, gas emissions and nutrient losses to the environment. - Methods for biological treatment of organic waste and residue materials and refinement into products of higher-value (e.g. soil conditioners, top-dressings) or energy (e.g. bioethanol, fuel). - Nutrient recycling of human waste from cities to agriculture in peri-urban areas

These two platforms are of course closely related and shares central competences on organic matter decomposition and nutrient turnover. For further info on

RESEARCH PORTFOLIO

The major subject area of LSJ is soil C and N turnover, in particular the temporal patterns of decomposition and gross N mineralisation-immobilisation following incorporation of organic residues, studied using stable isotopes (13C, 15N). Simulation modelling of soil C and N turnover as well as cropping system productivity and environmental effects, both in the short term (within one growing season) and in the long term (at the cropping system rotation level)  as well as the very long-term trend in soil humus have also been covered in his research.

LSJ has published 96 papers in international (H-index of 26), peer-reviewed journals of which more ¾ have been written with international collaborators, 20 chapters in books or reports, 7 full scientific reports and more than 20 popular articles. LSJ has participated in +60 international scientific conferences and has published more than 60 proceedings and other non-reviewed publications and popular articles. Finally he is the first author of a teaching textbook in Applied Plant Nutrition, published since2004 (now 4th ed.), and co-editor on a textbook about Animal Manure Recycling: Treatment and Management published Sept 2013 by Wiley & Sons.

LSJ has been involved in 40 research projects (22 as project leader, 18 with international collaborators) since 1994, of which 14 projects are currently running. He has supervised more than 20 Ph.D. students (currently 3 as main supervisor, 7 as co-supervisor) and 8 postdocs (currently 6). He has been member of a number of national scientific committees and expert panels. LSJ has been a Section Editor of Plant and Soil, reviewer for another 10 different scientific journals, and has been external referee on various European research proposals.

Experiences and qualifications in relation to teaching

Teaching experience

My teaching experience at university level started when I became a Ph.D. student in 1991, developed during my Assistant Professorship and consolidated during my 7 years as Associate Professor (since 1999). In all the years the total teaching load (courses, supervision, etc.) for teachers in the Plant and Soil Science section has been high for many years, but was somewhat less (25%) during the years I was appointed Study Director (2003-2007). In the PMSO my teaching activities has been continued at full rate, apart from 2012-2013, where I was substituted for more than half of my teaching due to leadership role for the SAFor research centre.

The following gives a brief introduction to the different types of teaching I have been involved in:

Lectures:

I usually give a large number of different university lectures per year (in 2 out of 4 blocks) at both BSc and MSc levels in a range of subjects within plant nutrition, plant production and environmental protection, spanning from methods of fertilizer and manure utilisation, through microbial turnover of organically bound nutrients in soil to scenario analyses of nutrient cycling at the watershed and national level and greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions at the global level.

Colloquia/stud. projects:

At the BSc and MSc level I usually supervise several colloquia or project-work groups per year. At the PhD level, I participate in 4-6 full day colloquia per year.

Laboratory exercises:

I have undertaken development, planning and tutoring of a number of laboratory exercises for BSc and MSc students including manual writing, see publication list.

Theoretical exercises:

I have undertaken development, planning and tutoring of a series of theoretical exercises for different courses, see publication list

In service training courses

5-10 times per year I teach classes on in-service-training courses for agricultural advisors and farmers, organised either by the Danish Agricultural Advisory Service, local farmers organisations or at farmers conventions and fairs.

Participation in development of programmes and courses

Course coordination:

I have been responsible for the course Applied Plant Nutrition (now titled Plant Nutrition and Soil Fertility) which is the core course of our group. In this context I have been responsible for the planning, coordination, teaching and student evaluation of these courses for more than 10 years.

I have also in the period 2008-2010 developed and coordinated a new KU-LIFE MSc course in Crop Production in a Farming Systems Perspective, mandatory in the MSc Agriculture program. I still teach on this course, but have handed over the coordination to a colleague.

Course development:

Together with my colleague Søren Husted, I have for more than 10 years been responsible for the continuous development and teaching of the core plant nutrition and soil fertility course for our group, Applied Plant Nutrition/ Plant Nutrition and Soil Fertility, which we have given 2005, where the whole course structure and method of teaching was changed due to a new block structure and week schedule with full and half days of teaching. We also implemented continuous assessment, with variation in the format and purpose of each partial assignment (short multiple choice tests, 24h essays tasks, mini-project solving in groups etc.).

I have also involved in the development of the new MSc course Land Use, Element Balances and Environmental Impact and the Thematic Course: Environment and Agriculture, at that time mandatory on the MSc Agriculture program. In 2008, as a PMSO chair, I took responsibility at the department level for developing and coordinating a replacement of the latter, and coordinated a new mandatory MSc course in Crop Production in a Farming Systems Perspective, which now has a stable participation of around 20 Danish and international students.

Also as a consequence of the PMSO position and its strategic goals, I developed a new MSc summer course Environmental Technology for Treatment and Management of the Bio-waste Manure in collaboration with colleagues at the Technical Faculty, University of Southern Denmark (SDU). The course has been offered successfully in August from 2008, with 20-25 Danish and international participants every year.

I have also stimulated and contributed to the development of KU-LIFE educational activities on Life Cycle Assessment, where we now offer a MSc and PhD course Life Cycle Assessment within Biological Production, coordinated by my colleague Sander Bruun.

In connection with the launch of the new BSc and MSc programs in Animal Science at KU-LIFE from 2011, I have contributed to the development and teaching of two new courses, the Animals, Humans and Society (Dyr, Mennesker og Samfund), mandatory BSc introductory course (60 students), and Animals and Sustainability, final mandatory MSc course (25 students), where my contribution was on environmental impacts of animal husbandry and sustainability.

All of these courses have been planned and taught by interdisciplinary teachers groups involving three or more departments.

Programme development:

I have been heavily involved in a number of study programme development initiatives over the years. Since 2001 I have been my department’s representative in the Study Committees for Agriculture, Horticulture and Economics, later Natural Sciences.

From 2002-2003 I was chairman of the Study Board committee for implementation of a new graduate program in Agriculture, KVL. With the reorganisation of KVL’s management in 2003, this work was replaced with my appointment as Study Director for a new undergraduate program (BSc) in Natural Resources and the graduate program (MSc) in Agriculture. This responsibility involved a complete bottom-up redesign of the old Agronomy and Forestry BSc programmes into an entirely new joint BSc program in Natural Resources started from 2005. This has given me a very fruitful learning experience of how to involve and organise large academic groups in such a process, in a way where the necessary compromises and solutions are accepted and embedded in the organisation in a constructive way. I have also been deeply involved in the communication strategy to promote the program in Natural Resources. The degree program has been relatively successful, both in terms of the number of incoming students and in terms of the new student’s evaluation of the organisation, coherence and quality of teaching in their 1st year. Approximately 100 students were admitted in 2005, but then numbers were dwindling to around 60 in 2009-10; however with the division of Animal Science into an independent program in 2011, application and admittance numbers increased dramatically to 60 for Animal Science and 80 for Natural Resource, so a total of 140 new BSc students, similar in 2012-2014.

Development of teaching materials

Textbooks

I have been the Head Editor of the textbook ‘Plant Nutrition, Soil Fertility, Fertilizers and Fertilization’, (see publication list) from 1997-2002. I am the first author of 5 chapters and second author of 3 chapters in this textbook (of a total of 19 chapters). I am also the editor of the new completely revised version of the book, now titled Applied Plant Nutrition (see publication list) published from 2005-2006.

In 2013 I also co-authored and co-edited a new international textbook within Animal Waste Recycling - Treatment and Management in collaboration with colleagues from several other Danish universities, funded by different industry organisations.

Web-mastering

With the advent of courseware like Absalon, I have developed and managed web-sites for many different courses

ICT tools

I have been project leader for an educational development project (2000-2001): ‘Development of visual and interactive methods for teaching diagnostics of plant nutrient deficiencies in agricultural and horticultural crops’, funded by ‘Dansk Center for Naturvidenskabsdidaktik’. (0.16 mio DKK). We developed an interactive web-based image database, which the KVL IT Learning Center has adopted as its standard image organising tool.

I have also participated in an EU-Socrates project within the Minerva-program (2001-2003), titled ‘Determination of Good Practice in the Design, Delivery and Support of Web-based ODL Case Studies (WebCase)’ in collaboration with a number of European university colleagues. We developed a model for interactive web-based case-studies, and the KVL IT Learning Center has adopted the concept as its standard case-study tool. For further info see www.webcase-online.info/  and webcase.kvl.dk/

Counselling and supervision at the BSc, MSc, PhD and postdoc level

I have been supervisor for a relatively large number of BSc project and in particular MSc thesis students over my academic career, on average 1 BSc and 3 MSc students per year (see lists below). For the MSc students, a high proportion have been in collaboration with external partners, both public research institutes and private companies or organisations.

During the latter years, in my PMSO (2007-2015), my tasks as PhD main- and co-supervisor has grown significantly, with a large number of PhD students having graduated in this period (10) and another 10 currently ongoing PhD projects, of which I am currently the main supervisor for 3, out of a total of 15 PhD students in the group. Furthermore, in the latter years the number of postdocs in our group has increased markedly, so we currently have 8 postdocs, of whom I am the main mentor for 5.
