Abstract
This note discusses the background against which the unusual claim made in IvO 166, i.e. That the victory celebrated by the epigram was a gift from Zeus, should be seen. It is argued that the claim was prompted directly by the extraordinary circumstances in which Troilos of Elis won his equestrian victory: he was an officiating Hellanodikas during the Olympics of 372 BC at which he won.
