Abstract
This article focuses on the enthusiasm with which accelerating technologies were received in the first half of the 20th century. Through a reading of popular works on speed and technology from this period, the values and goals of speed and acceleration are analyzed. A central question in the article is how speed transformed the social construction of time and space. The fascination with speed in the first half of the century is related to theories on speed and modernity put forward in the last decades of the 20th century by Zygmunt Bauman and Paul Virilio.
