Abstract
In Nørrebro – a large white building with a cupola and a 20-meter high minaret topped with a small crescent marks the site of the newly built mosque, the Hamad Bin Khalifa Civilisation Center in Copenhagen, which is now the largest Scandinavian mosque. This is the story about the opening of the first Grand Mosque in Denmark – a story that reflects the general articulation of Muslims in Denmark in the public life as a threat to Danish culture and society. The Danish Islamic Council itself uses the concept of ’Grand Mosque’ describing the building, that is a mosque, which occupies a central place in Copenhagen’s Muslim community in size and importance.
