The development of speech production in children with cleft palate

Elisabeth Willadsen, Kathy Chapman

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of speech development of children with cleft palate +/- cleft lip. The chapter will begin with a discussion of the impact of clefting on speech. Next, we will provide a brief description of those factors impacting speech development for this population of children. Finally, research examining various aspects of speech development of infants and young children with cleft palate (birth to age five) will be reviewed. This final section will be organized by typical stages of speech sound development (e.g., prespeech, the early word stage, and systematic phonology) and will include a summary of typical characteristics for each stage.
