Translated title of the contribution: The Temporality of Signs. History and Historicity after The Linguistic Turn

Abstract

The Temporality of Signs investigates the Linguistic Turn and its implications in the field of history. The author draws on French philosopher Jacques Derrida’s work, to reopen the debate of time-honoured problems in historiography: the concept of “the past”, the tradition of source criticism, and the truth claims in historical representations. Through a concept of “radical historicity”, the book seeks to displace the narrow focus on signs, textuality and discourse in current discussions on historiography, by translating claims and insights from the Linguistic Turn to questions of time and historicity. The author discusses select empirical studies in cultural history, especially New Historicism.
