Susceptible Bodies: Exploring the emergence of susceptibility in the CAM practices of acupuncture and reflexology.

Abstract

This article explores a group of complementary alternative medical (CAM) practitioners’ perceptions and cultivation of a specific type of relationship to their clients, which is connected to what they consider a successful treatment process. More specifically, the article explores how what is understood as ‘susceptible bodies’ by acupuncturists and reflexologists, are brought into being through various bodily and narrative practices. From a practitioners’ perspective, these practices potentially influence treatment outcomes and enables the emergence of not just new bodies, but also potentially of new worlds. Methodologically the article draws on practitioner interviews and participant-observation in clinics of acupuncture and reflexology.
