Abstract
The article takes issue with the view that Shari'a is inflexible and immutable. On the contrary Shari'a is shown to have a flexible and broad tradition which remains alive. Methodological resources such as maqasid and qawa'id are especially pointed to as techniques which are used to reform and modernise.
