Abstract

A transformed geopolitical environment after the Cold War, 9/11 and the Iraq war fundamentally altered the security challenges of small states. This introductory chapter discusses how to understand the concept of small states and small state security challenges in the contemporary world order and introduces the central thematics of the book Small States and International Security: Europe and Beyond.
