Reductive and sorptive properties of sulfate green rust (GRSO4)

Sorin Nedel

Abstract

The Fe(II), Fe(III) hydroxide containing sulfate in its structure, called sulfate green rust (GRSO4), can effectively reduce and convert contaminants to less mobile and less toxic forms. However, the ability of GRSO4 to remove positively charged species from solution, via sorption, is very limited. Better knowledge of GRSO4 properties and limitations contribute to improved ability to predict the fate of toxic species in soils, aquifers and could help in designing future remediation scenarios.
