Reduced lipid peroxidation in healthy subjects after supplementation with antioxidative nutrients in low doses

Abstract

Lipid peroxidation is a key event in the development of atherosclerotic lesions and there is a constant need for good tissue protection. Method: The effect of a 6 weeks supplementation with a juice fortified with α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, β-carotene, Se and Zn (twice the RDI), compared with placebo, was studied in 36 healthy subjects in a double-blind manner. Plasma before and after therapy was analyzed for antioxidative capacity (AOC) and malone dialdehyde (MDA) as markers of antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation. Result: AOC increased by 19% after active therapy (309±79 vs. 259±54 μmol trolox eq l-1, p<0.05), but not after placebo (272±90 vs 277±61 μmol trolox eq. I-1). MDA decreased by 13% after supplementation (045-0.10 vs. 0.53-0.13 /jg I1, p<0.05), but not after the placebo period (0.55-0.14 vs. 0.52'0.13/jg -I1). Conclusion: The results support that a protective effect against lipid peroxidation can be achieved by supplementation with an antioxidant juice, in healthy subjects. This indicates that their habitual diet may contain suboptimal amounts of essential factors needed for tissue protection.
