Abstract

For more than a century, the morphological analysis of PIE ‘cow’, reflected in Gk βοῦς, Ved. gáuḥ, Lat. bōs etc., has been a key issue in Indo-European morphology. This contribution suggests that PIE ‘cow’ was most probably a hysterodynamic u-stem which would render a number of observed anomalies in individual branches entirely regular.
