Abstract
How do we describe the life of the communities connected to church buildings? The concept of 'congregation' denotes both the population of a whole parish and the tight community using the church building. In this chapter, we will use both definitions when we portray two particular congregations. Our method will be Hopewell’s concept of the parish story (1987). With this, Hopewell finds the ‘powerful narrative’ of the congregation. Our research objects are two geographical parishes: Longbridge in Birmingham, England and Sydhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark. We selected the two parishes for sharing characteristics in history, demography and geography. Yet, they are still different, as we will see in the parish stories or narratives of the congregations.
