Abstract
The concepts of positions, interests and needs are often used in the mediation literature, but they tend to be poorly described. In this paper I trace the origin and meaning of the concepts of positions, interests and needs. I then discuss the role of these concepts in mediation practice and call attention to the need to examine in more depth how these concepts are used in practice.
