NMR-based metabolomics and hyphenated NMR techniques – a perfect match in natural products research

Joachim Møllesøe Vinther, Sileshi Gizachew Wubshet, Dan Stærk

    Abstract

Nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics provides a powerful tool for exploring patterns in the chemical fingerprint of a large number of plant extracts. Combined with hyphenated NMR techniques - capable of characterizing individual constituents in complex plant extracts - this analytical technology platform constitutes an invaluable tool in natural product research. This chapter covers a short introduction to NMR-based metabolomics and hyphenated NMR techniques, and examples of their use in natural products research are provided. The advantage of coupling the techniques with in vitro bioassays is also discussed.
