Abstract
The author has made a thorough study of the medjay leaders, a title generally translated as ‘chief of police’. In the New Kingdom their role would seem to encompass other tasks as well, such as being negotiator between the inhabitants
of Deir el-Medina and the surrounding society. One of these high officials,
named Mentumose, appears in a substantial number of texts, and, although no representations of him survive, we are able to obtain a vivid impression of this versatile character.
