Measurement of Forward-Backward Charged Particle Correlations with ALICE

Carsten Søgaard

Abstract

Part I of the defence covers experimental development carried out in the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research - CERN. For the Time Projection Chamber a sophisticated laser calibration system has been developed by the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI). In order for this calibration system to work, a special trigger interface was implemented. The developed and tested firmware for the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) will be presented.

Part II is the presentation of the analysis - a study of, so-called, forward-backward correlations. The correlations between charged particles, produced in proton-proton collisions at vs=900 GeV and vs=7 TeV over a wide range in pseudoradidity (-3.5 < ¿ < 3.5), are measured. The results from these studies, at the unprecedented high energy afforded by the LHC, are presented.
