Abstract
Two gnomai on the nature and consequences of the μωρία θνητῶν frame Euripides' Trojan Women (ll. 95-97, 1203-1206), shedding light on the problematic theodicy of the play by displaying a double perspective, divine and human respectively, on the ruinous fate of both Achaeans and Trojans. The article presents a twofold structure: in the first part, the critical and exegetical debate on ll. 95-97 is reconsidered on the light of the religious ethos displayed by the plays' prologue; the second part broadens the perspective on the two gnomai by proposing to consider them against the intertextual and structural models of Aesch. Ag. 471-474 and Sol. fr. 13W.2, on the ground of the relationships between divine retribution, arbitrariness of the Fate, and moral shortsightedness on the part of mortals.
