Abstract
Increasing evidence has suggested an association between diet and periodontal disease. Dietary modulations of the inflammatory pathways are likely to influence the periodontal inflammation and thus tissue degradation, but distinct mechanisms remain to be defined at large. The present article presents an overview of the evidence linking selected nutrients with periodontal disease. Supplementation of antioxidants and polyunsaturated fatty acids appears to provide additional benefits to the resolution of the periodontal inflammation following periodontal treatment. This calls for increased focus from dentists on dietary modulation of the inflammatory pathways in the treatment and prevention of periodontitis and to some extent its comorbidities.
