Abstract
The occurrence of Peribatodes ilicaria (Geyer, 1833) in Denmark is discussed based on literature records and specimens kept in collections. We located 15 specimens collected in the years 1906 to 1919 in the Danish islands of Fyn, Lolland and Falster of which nine specimens were found as larvae on old lichen-overgrown bushes of privet (Ligustrum vulgare) in Alstrup on Falster. We
discuss the total distribution of P. ilicaria. The species has an atlanto-mediterranean distribution ranging from Morocco through the Iberian Peninsula and France to southern Belgium. Outside this area it is known from scattered records throughout Germany. It is moreover known from five specimens found at the south coast of England (1990-2002), in one specimen from northern
Poland (1919) and one specimen from the Czech Republic. There is also a record of a specimen from Greece, far outside of the known range of P. ilicaria. Records from Bulgaria, Italy, Slovakia, Rumania and Turkey are discussed and considered erroneous. We conclude that outside of its permanent distribution range from Morocco to Belgium P. ilicaria occurs as a rare migrant which is
sometimes able to establish temporary populations as it was the case in Denmark about 100 years ago. We discard the theory (postulated by Top-Jensen & Fibiger, 2009) that the occurrence of P. ilcaria in Denmark (and probably also in neighbouring countries) is due to introduction with privet plants, as Ligustrum
is only one of several host plants for this species.
