Indicator values for lichens on Quercus as a tool to monitor ammonia pollution in Denmark

K. Berthelsen, H. B. Olsen, Ulrik Søchting

    Abstract

The epiphytic lichen vegetation on solitary Quercus trees was investigated

on 13 locations in Denmark in order to test the usability of indicator

values to quantify ammonia deposition from the ambient air. Indicator

values calculated for each location corresponded well with the expected

ecological conditions. The indicator values for nitrogenous nutrients significantly

correlated with measured nitrogen content in Xanthoria parietina

thalli sampled from the investigated Quercus trees. Indicator values for

some species are critically evaluated, and it is suggested that indicator

values can serve as a tool for quantitative estimation of ammonia deposition in relation to sensitive Danish ecosystems.
