El Quijote, Descartes y la tradición de la novela autoconsciente

Abstract

The present article compares Cervantes' Don Quixote with Descartes' philosophy in order to pursue the practically simultaneous appearance of, respectively, the selfconscious or metafictional novel and the philosophy of the subject. A series of traits common to Cervantine narrative and Cartesian philosophy emerges that is related to, on the one hand, the appearance of the natural sciences in the sixteenth century and, on the other, to Renaissance individualism. Ultimately, the intention is to situate Don Quixote in its proper historical paradigm.
