Abstract
The article reviews outcome studies of psychodynamic psychotherapy focusing on controlled clinical trials. Results from meta-analyses are presented followed by findings from studies of dynamic therapy for specific disorders. On the basis of the existing research it seems reasonable to conclude that in general dynamic therapy has a treatment effect comparable to other well-established treatment paradigms. Furthermore support for the efficacy of psychodynamic therapies can be found for certain specific diagnostic categories, eg. depression and borderline personality disorder. Still, there is a pressing need for more systematic empirical research into the outcome of psychodynamic therapy, in particular research focusing on long-term treatments and utilizing instruments measuring constructs directly relevant to psychodynamic treatments.
