Abstract

In my ongoing PhD project, I examine how the surname-typological middle name has manifested itself in the 19th century in Denmark, following a restrictive naming policy that involved, among other regulations, that the surnames became fixed. Thereby, the traditional primary patronym was gradually replaced and a significant factor for identification in the individual’s names vanished. In the same period the usage of surname-typological middle names increased among the wider population. By categorising the middle names deducted from the entire populations’ names in the 1880-census and comparing these to different demographic and geographic aspects, a thorough overview of the name usage is obtained and suggestions for the motives behind the usage can be made.
In this article, some primary results based on statistics are shown, concentrating on the name usage in 10 areas in Denmark. Despite indications that this kind of middle name may have been a way to preserve the close kind of relation to the nearest family in the name like the primary patronym traditionally had done, however as the pilot project demonstrates, this is not clearly evident.
