Cup marks on stones in Danish Bronze Age settlements

Pernille Foss, Jens Winther Johannsen

Abstract

Cup marks on boulders and stones are a common fenomenon but are rarely found in situ at settlements. The article deals with five cases where boulders or stones with cup marks have been found in pits at settlements dated to the late bronze Age. These rare instances give rise to a more nuanced interpretation of the sacral elements in Bronze Age daily life.
