Cold War Discourses under Pressure: Scandinavian Public Service TV and American Policies, 1968-75

Abstract

The military involvement of the US in the Vietnam War was an important issue on Scandinavian political and international agendas, in the major news media, in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and in political parties from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. After 1968, it developed into a comprehensive political issue which had a major effect on public opinion in the Scandinavian countries regarding the US and its role in international politics. The Vietnam conflict mobilized and activated the general public just as it influenced Scandinavian governments on major current international issues and it clearly weakened the democratic hegemony of the US in all Scandinavian countries.
