Abstract

This volume collects the letters written home during the American Civil War and are important for what they tell about race relations as seen through the autobiography of the Army officer leading the Norths first regiment of African American soldiers. The fight for equality and manhood are manifest in every letter.The book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in History and was a selection of the History Book Club in the United States.
