N2 - The posthumous papers or ‚Nachlass‘ of the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) have been edited three times over the course of 150 years, each time according to different principles. In From the Posthumous Papers of Søren Kierkegaard (1869-1881), the editors H.P. Barfod and Hermann Gottsched published a selection, arranged so as to provide the groundwork for future biographical studies of the great man. In the edition Søren Kierkegaard’s Papers (1909-1948), P.A. Heiberg, Victor Kuhr and Einer Torsting arranged the papers in systematic sections and sub-sections, mirroring a modernistic matter-of- factness. Finally, in the recent edition, Søren Kierkegaard’s Writings (1997-2013), one can discern a post-modern respect for the documents themselves, related to the so-called New or Material Philology, and an interest in the process of writing. The present article explores the consequences of these different principles for the editing of a single entry in one of Kierkegaard’s journals.
