Abstract

This chapter explores the conditions under use of an ad hoc Rasch scale based on binary items in analyses involving repeated measurements. A typical example of the above situation is provided by data from the diabetes care in general practice (DCGP) study. The chapter first describes the generalized multilevel Rasch model framework, the ways how violations of the Rasch model are incorporated and elaborate on the relevant research questions it stands to answer for the above introduced DCGP data. Then, it describes ways of identifying the violations of the Rasch model in order to perform analyses in parsimonious models; these methods are illustrated with the DCGP data. Finally, the authors perform a simulation analysis to illustrate some general principles for longitudinal analysis of ad hoc scales and discuss the results.
