Amorphous iron (II) carbonate: crystallization energetics and comparison to other carbonate minerals related to CO2 sequestration

Abstract

The synthesis, characterization and crystallization energetics of amorphous iron (II) carbonate (AFC) are reported. AFC may form as a precursor for siderite (FeCO 3). The enthalpy of crystallization (ΔH crys) of AFC is similar to that of amorphous magnesium carbonate (AMC) and more exothermic than that of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). This suggests that enthalpy of crystallization in carbonate systems is ionic-size controlled, which may have significant implications in a wide variety of conditions, including geological sequestration of anthropogenic carbon dioxide.
