Americas, Sociocultural Overviews: Caribbean

    Abstract

The modern Caribbean emerged through the transformations that took place with European colonization, which resulted in the establishment of large-scale plantation societies and the repopulation of the area with Europeans, Africans, and Asians. This resulted in societies that are stratified in terms of race and class, culturally diverse and highly mobile. Key issues in research on sociocultural aspects of the area include African continuities, the cohesion of societies, the coexistence of contradictory value systems linked to colonial and local frameworks of life and their (re)interpretation in everyday life, the role of out-migration, and the development of transnational sociocultural systems.
